On January 1, 2012, two medical-practice associations, the Medical Group Management Association and its standard-setting and certification body, the American College of Medical Practice Executives, will merge into a single association designed to create efficiencies and streamline processes. Currently, they are legally separate but aligned organizations (as the respective logos attest.) Though they will be merged in 2012, the new association will continue to use both established brands — MGMA and ACMPE — and strive to merge the brands over time.
MGMA is presently the largest professional membership association for medical practice management leaders with 22,500 members. ACMPE’s 6,750 members have focused on matters of certification and standard setting. In merging, members of what will be referred to as MGMA-ACMPE will pay a single dues payment, with Board certification no longer requiring a second membership and dues payment.
“As healthcare evolves, so must we,” states current MGMA board chair Shena Scott. “Many of our members and their physicians are moving into new employment models where they will need different skill sets. . . . We need to leverage our strengths to provide our members with the tools they will need to succeed in many different environments.”
The new association will be governed by a single, unified board of directors. The association’s 22,500 members lead 13,600 organizations nationwide in which 280,000 physicians provide more than 40% of the healthcare services delivered in the United States.
